As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
