A defence official has revealed that the MoD is actively looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in any cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
