The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has left her position as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This comes after a judicial decision that challenged her legal standing to hold the office.

Official Departure

The nation's top law enforcement official, the Attorney General, confirmed Habba's resignation on the start of the week. Bondi stated that the judicial decision made it "untenable" for her to lead the department effectively.

"But do not mistake adherence to the ruling as defeat," she declared. "The effort will now stretch across the country."

Legal Background

Her resignation follows closely on a US appeals court found that she had been unlawfully serving as the federal prosecutor. This decision is likely to affect scores of prosecutions in New Jersey.

The court declared that a acting appointment that did not receive Senate approval violated the statute on vacant positions.

Future Role and Reaction

It was also stated that she will continue working within the DOJ as a high-level advisor. Habba plans to challenge the decision of the ruling, aiming for a reversal.

On a social media platform, she wrote that the judiciary "must not override the President's choice of lawyers responsible for performing the executive branch's core responsibility of enforcing the law."

Bondi commended the prosecutor's work and noted that under her leadership, the Newark saw a one-fifth decrease in crime. It was also reported that the Camden experienced its first summer in half a century with no murders.

Legal Career

The 41-year-old attorney, was initially recruited to Trump's personal legal team in 2021. She went on to represented Trump in his hush-money trial in 2024, leading to his conviction on 34 counts of financial record manipulation.

Prior to assuming the role of US Attorney, Donald Trump had announced he was selecting her as his presidential counsellor in a potential future term, calling Habba as deeply loyal and a dedicated fighter for justice.
